Back from blog hiatus!

Hello Everyone!
Sorry for the extremely long time between posts.... whats can I say, I am boring with nothing to say :oP. Please plan on stopping by more regularly if you have stopped coming, cause I plan on updating much more frequently than had been the case over the last little while.

Quick note- Thanks to all at The Human Bean.
Friday was a Blast!

This past month has gone, (dare I say it?).....fairly smoothly, so really not a whole lot to report.

I am planning on going into the studio in the very near future to record some stuff. I am trying to decide what the best route is, just a demo of 4 songs or a full CD at 8-10 songs. The issue really is capital..you know, cash, bread, dough, moola, dinero etc. etc.

If I could wish with no strings attached, I'd definently go for the full track. I 've tossed around the idea of preselling copies in hopes of raising some funds, but other than that I am stumped.
Any thoughts?

Peace, Shamus

Sobering Moment

Colborne Chronicle Article

I found out yesterday that a guy I worked with at Horizon has killed himself. They found him in a tree, in Colborne. This is supremely disturbing to me..... I have found myself thinking of him and his family almost constantly. I wonder if there is something I could have said, you know? Something I could have done?

I don't believe that we are here, just to take this ride and get off. Our impact on others and vise versa is not only a by-product of this trip, but second only to trying to understand and live out the will of your Creator.

Today, I am not laughing.

Peace,
Shamus

Brain Dead

Apparently I have forgotten the importance of thinking..... Thursday night, I set my alarm for work the next morning and never actually turned it on. I woke up, Friday morning, at 7:10 am..... I was suppose to start work at 7:00 am.... Just in case you were wondering, other than my lack of higher functioning motor-skills, the new job is going great. The people that I am working with are friendly and helpful , and the company seems to truly care about you as a person, not just another lug in some monolithic machine. And of course, the extra pay is nice. Sorry that I haven't updated lately , will try to be a little more consistent.

Peace,
Shamus

Booked at the Bean!

The date has been tentatively set for me to play at The Human Bean in Cobourg.......
Friday Oct. 7/05 from 8-10 pm

Come on out for a good time, good drinks, and of course.... good music!

Peace,
Shamus

Here I am, Turn the page...

It seems to me that life winds its merry way in chapters. That being said, I believe that perhaps this is a new one for me. New job, new outlook, as it may be. I am excited to be starting at Belden on Wednesday, but also quite nervous as well. Feels kinda like the first day of school, Christmas morning and a trip to the dentist all wrapped into one. Oh, only in work boots and safety glasses.

I also feel like I am getting a fresh start with my music. The worship band that I play in is moving into some opportunities to lead worship in a coffeehouse format, at 'Meet at 66 King St.' in Cobourg. This is awesome and daunting all at the same time. I am pursing some venues to play some solo gigs as well, and feel like I am developing as a musician in the process.

Quinn is growing like a bad weed, and everyday he seems to learn a new way to be adorable and annoying all at the same time. He is such an amazing part of my life.

Mary-Beth has returned to JHS, which really sucks. Here's the scoop. Her hours kept getting cut at Alpha House, due to funding policy, and I got the layoff notice. So we decided it would be best for her to go back, inspite of the high costy of travel, and the long hours. We have to put food on the table. So then I get the call from Belden and get the job, making higher pay, one frickin day after she tells JHS she is coming back, and tells Alpha House that she is only going to take relief hours. The folks at Alpha House were happy to help out, and found a replacement for her THAT DAY. Really, I can't complain too much though..... it certainly isn't a bad thing that my wife has two jobs. Some people can't even find one job..... I love you MB, and thanks for your willingness to take on extra work when we are in a pinch.

Well gotta run guys.... talk to ya soon...

Extra Belt Hole Required

Why is it that I almost always end off Sundays feeling like I need a wheelbarrow to role me home and a cherry picker in a half-ton to get me in bed? After church this morning, we went to Swiss Chalet.... christian chicken, as the people at my church call it. I ate way to much. Then we went to Napanee, to visit my cousin and we ate some awesome hamburgers and potatoes on the B.B.Q. Did you hear that? That sound is my waist expanding.... the twang and snap at the end was my belt letting go and the floor joists buckling. Bulimia anyone?

Waiting....impatiently

Here I sit,
beside the phone,
waiting for the man,
to call my home,
with news of job,
and security,
to combat my stress,
and anxiety.
"Will he call?",
the question rings,
he said he would,
but this waiting thing,
Sucks.

There is a Light!

Who ever said pessimism doesn't get you anywhere? I've been in a rotten mood for the last couple days, on account of the unemployment thing, an low and behold, the phone rang today.... and it wasn't bad news! I have an interview at Belden, which will be my second, tommorow at 10am. If I get this job, I may be able to start monday, which means I won't miss a beat, or paycheck, as it may be. That would rock! Pessimism is the way of the future :oP.

Peace,
Shamus

Chicken Little.....

Is it just me or is the sky falling? Seems everytime you hear any news, the glass is half empty. Perhaps its just my mood lately. I think I'm allergic to stupidity.... Anyhow, I'm gonna chance getting in bed. If anyone knows of employment opportunities in Ontario, please post em.
Fallingggggggggggggggggggggggg asleep at the wheel. Will post more, later.

More Recent News

While attending the Shelter Valley Folk Festival, I had the opportunity to play with many fine musicians... a full list is availible at the link to the right. The concerts were well and good, but it was the campfires which were most impressive to me. Picture a crowd of 40-50, 10 of whom are holding varing instruments, all blending there styles and preferences, as each take turns leading songs..... Awesome! Saturday morning, about 1am, as the fires don't start till the days festivities are finished at 11pm, I played 'Daddy Knows' for the circle. I was joined by Magoo, a well known folk performer, playing a mandolin, a bearded man, whos name I have forgotten, playing a guitar, and another gentleman, who's name is Jason, playing a guitarone, or baritone guitar. It was spine-tingling. As I left the fire shortly thereafter, Jason followed me and struck up a conversation. Turns out Jason is the producer and host of a radio program called 'Acoustic Roots' on the public radio station out of Ottawa. He asked me to send him a copy of 'Daddy Knows' so he can play it on his show..... !! I'm very pumped. I will post here as soon as I know when it will be on... should be a month or so.

Second bit of news is a gig alert.... I will be playing at The Human Bean in Cobourg sometime in the next little while, so please keep a watch here for the date.

Other than expecting the world to fall more apart as I sleep today, (I'm on midnights for my last week of employment) nothing else to add.

Goodnight, er day... as it may be,

Shamus

Folking Awesome

This past weekend, it was my distinct pleasure to be involved with the Shelter Valley Folk Festival. I camped, I listened, I learned , I played, I sang, I ate, I drank, I caroused, I visited, I annoyed, and just generally did what comes natural. My volunteer time was spent as Festival Media Liason..... which was quite cool, and mostly aggravating and frustrating as the media usually is. Quinn spent the weekend at Poppa's... Which was a sigh of relief for MB and I for about 18 seconds.... then the feeling of dread that accompany's losing a limb, or otherwise attached appendage began to sink in. Naw, it really was a good weekend. I had a chance to play on the mainstage of the festival for the volunteer kick off concert on the preceeding Thursday. Nerve racking but awesome all-in-all. Came back to find out that I am being laid off from work at the end of the week.... kind of a downer, but maybe the boot in the pants I need to pursue the path somewhere else. Well, thats an update.... not everything, but I gotta run...

Peace,
Shamus
